Professor Anthony S. Brechkow is one of the best people that I know, and has been a strong influence in my life, from a young age until today. Tony is a veritable master of all trades, as he manages entire apartment buildings nearly single-handedly. No problem is too complicated for Tony. He could be standing in the middle of a blazing inferno, and still manage to think the situation (not problem!) through with a cool head, calming those around him. Tony has been and remains involved in all types of businesses, from the aforementioned apartment building complexes, to bakeries of pita bread and healthy snack foods, to glass companies, and many more.

Tony Brechkow in a santa hatWhen I founded 123saunas.com a decade and a half ago, Tony was a beacon of support. Back in the early days of the Internet, all of the Internet marketing “experts” told me that it would not be possible to sell saunas on the Internet. I did not listen to these nay-sayers. Instead, I called the most positive person that I know: Tony!

Tony loves to share his knowledge with those that are eager to learn. It is for this reason that he has found the time to contribute his time as a professor at the St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario. Tony would do almost anything to help a young person succeed in life.

We are talking about one of the most generous people on Earth. If you see Tony and compliment him on his shirt, he will not hesitate to take it off and give it to you. Recently, Tony and I had a nice visit in Panama. Tony got a nice taste of my raw vegan lifestyle, and lost about 20 pounds, with a simultaneous boost in energy. Not that he needed the extra energy… at 77 years old, you would not believe how active he remains. Tony bounced up and down the mountain, and completed more odd jobs than a crew of seven able-bodied locals half his age.

Cheers to you, Tony!

Dr. Dean Ornish: Healing Through Diet

Dr. Dean Ornish

In this video, Dean Ornish discusses a number of big issues. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity are huge killers that are entirely preventable through diet and lifestyle.

Loneliness and depression are also large-scale problems that make people much more likely to smoke, drink, overeat, overwork, get sick and die early. The simple treatment is anything that promotes intimacy: friendship, altruism, compassion and service are just some examples.

A study by David Spiegle of Stanford was published in The Lancet. The randomized study examined the survival rates of breast cancer patients. Those that formed a support group, meeting just one hour per week had twice the survival rate after five years.

Ornish credits his yoga teacher with isolating the key difference between illness and wellness:

illness vs. wellness. i vs we.

Partner Yoga

Partner Yoga

It is hard to deny the artistic value in posing with a partner. But that’s the least important reason to give partner yoga a try. If you have the luxury of practicing with a partner, both will benefit from the added complexity. Some poses provide an extra challenge for both partners, others are mutually-supportive. In the remaining poses, partners take turns supporting and gently encouraging the other.

Yoga Asanas

Martial Arts and Yoga

The body is a sophisticated vehicle for the soul. We may not ever feel the need to stretch ourselves into strange positions, but we certainly ought to maintain our body in the healthiest condition that we can. As with martial arts practices, the physical part of yoga, the asanas or postures at once stretch and strengthen all of the muscles while purifying them of toxins.

These asanas are as artistic as they are scientific and medicinal. Please be cautious when attempting any pose. If it hurts, back out of it slowly, and continue breathing softly and deeply. It may help to compare pain with landmines in terms of how to deal with them. Approach carefully. Disarm skillfully. Continue softly, attentive to other landmines. A far more common approach would be to avoid the pain altogether, in which case the landmines persist, ignored, with occasional accidental explosions. Each person must decide whether to ignore or seek and disarm her landmines

Chris Bendo

Chris Bendo produced the album entitled Bonzz: One, in my opinion one of the best albums of all time. The album contained both lyrical and instrumental pieces, including Innocent Child, which Chris was generous enough to teach me how to play. Although my skills on the piano will never match his, I composed and played my Tribute to Chris Bendo in memory of his iron-clad friendship.
